Researchers & Partners

The research team was comprised of partner organizations, both co-operatives and community enterprises that have policy and business interests in the research, and an interdisciplinary group of academic researchers with expertise and special interests in co-operative studies, globalization and social cohesion research.

The project was conceived and structured as participatory action research which allows for and encourages, active involvement in identifying the research goals, the types and range of information collected and in expressing what types of analysis and information might be of most assistance in their business enterprise. Participatory action research emphasizes that the research outcomes (and process) may alter the operations of the organization being studied and that researchers and partner organizations will work together to pursue research that is of mutual interest. The outcomes of this research were intended to help shape and inform the policy and business decisions of co-operatives, governments and others, while providing a rich resource for understanding the nature of co-operative membership and social cohesion within the context of globalization.
